Perth is famous, or perhaps infamous, for being known as the world’s most isolated city. The capital city of Western Australia sits between the Indian Ocean and the vast Australian Outback with the next nearest major city, Adelaide lying 2,100 kilometres away!
Perth may be off on its own, but there’s definitely no shortage of things to do in this vibrant city! You will find splendid beaches, sprawling parks, fantastic coastline views, and a busy city centre bustling with restaurants and nightclubs, as well as fascinating museums.
The weather is beautiful, especially in the summer when the outdoor lifestyle starts up and people get busy surfing, swimming, and fishing in the gorgeous sea, or golfing and hiking in the lovely surrounding countryside. There are lots of ways to spend your time getting some sun in Perth!
If you decide to make Perth your holiday destination, and you most certainly should, then it’s easy to find a place to stay in budget accommodation in South Perth which will be your home base for a great adventure in and around the world’s loneliest city! There is so much to do we will just barely be able to scratch the surface, but here are some of our favourite things to experience here!
Fremantle – This is a cosy little suburb within Perth, but it feels like a port city of its own beside the water and is chock full of wonderful things to see and do including beaches, cafes, shopping, historical buildings, and breathtaking views.
Wander the Fremantle Markets where there are over 150 vendor stalls featuring great food, unique gifts, and handmade trinkets. Bathers Beach is one of the nicest in Perth, you can rent a lounge chair and do some sunbathing, go for a swim, and enjoy watching the almost always spectacular sunset over the Indian Ocean. Head back to your hotel in style by renting a limo, a great way to see nighttime Perth as it passes by your window!
Elizabeth Quay – is a perfect daytime or evening activity in Perth. Built on the water, this fun and attractive area features artwork, shopping, restaurants, bars, and stunning views of the river and the city.
This is the perfect spot to grab a bite to eat or take a stroll along the water and across the Elizabeth Quay Pedestrian Bridge, a suspension bridge spanning the inlet featuring panoramic views of the Perth skyline on one side and the Swan River and South Perth on the other. It’s one of the best places to take photos in the city!
Heirisson Island – This urban island is home to western grey kangaroos introduced here in 1998 and they’re here to stay! The kangaroos tend to be a bit drowsy during the daytime, but you can usually spot five or six hopping about the island. It’s fun to see them in a natural environment so close to the city centre!
Art Gallery of WA – Founded in 1895 and located in Perth’s heart, the gallery occupies several heritage buildings including one of Perth’s oldest structures, the former police courts built in 1905.
This wing is now called the Centenary Galleries, and hosts rotating exhibitions featuring pieces by local and international artists. Entry is free!
Kings Park – A great swath of green beside the Swan River, this park is truly king-size! The park is among the world’s largest city parks, coming in ahead of London’s Hyde Park and New York’s Central Park. The park is a favourite among locals and visitors alike because of its many interesting features, and pleasant, bucolic atmosphere.
Start by climbing the 101 steps to the top of DNA tower so you can get the lay of the land whilst taking in the scenic vistas. Then hit the ground walking through the lush greenery of the Botanic Garden, which showcases over 3,000 species of plants that are all native to Australia, some of which are unique to the island continent.
Next up it’s time to explore the Bushland Nature Trail that loops around the park in a comfortable 25-minute walk. The trail is lined by wildflowers and native birds populate the trees, all together creating a delightful combination of scents, sights, and sounds!
WA Museum Boola Bardip – This fascinating Western Australian (WA) Museum gets its name from the Whadjuk Noongar language’s word for “Many Stories’ ‘, Boola Bardip, and the many amazing exhibits housed within ensure it more than lives up to its name.
These stories are told by 8 permanent galleries housing diverse wonders of land, sea, and outer space including dinosaur bones and various fossils of ancient life, the huge skeleton of the world’s largest animal, the blue whale, and meteorites!
