The 5 Best Places for Winter Holidays in the Sun

Here in the UK, it isn’t much of a secret that we don’t get enough sun. What more of an excuse do you need to treat yourself to a winter getaway somewhere that has a little bit more of it. We’re sensory creatures, of course, so those dark months are a time when many of us sorely miss the heat and brightness of summer. 

Turn your winter sun daydreams into realities. Here are a few ideas to get those plans started:

Egypt

Pleasantly warm with clear blue skies, Egypt is a lovely escape from winter darkness. There’s a lot less humidity than you’ll find during peak summer months, meaning that this is a prime time to visit.

You can even take an Egyptian river cruise along the Nile for maximum relaxation. Explore the Valley of the Kings by day and sip cocktails from the deck by night.

In addition to the famous sights like the pyramids and the sphinx, you’ll also have ample opportunity to admire some of the spectacular temples and statues. One example is Abu Simbel, a monument to Rameses II and his queen, Nefertari. This impressive sight is lit by the sun only twice a year, once on the date of the pharaoh’s birthday, and once on the date of his coronation!

The Bahamas

Max out on sunshine and paddle in turquoise waters somewhere far away, i.e.: The Bahamas. Even in December, the temperatures can climb as high as 26°C, which isn’t bad at all for a winter sun holiday. Sink your toes into the pink sand beach. Stay on the islands around Boxing Day or New Year and you can celebrate the colourful carnival of Junkanoo with them, too.

Bali

Bali is another tropical paradise with a party atmosphere during the winter months. Aside from the glorious beaches, the green, lush island scenery is something you can’t pass up. Explore rice terraces and jungles to your heart’s content!

In December and January, Bali experiences more rainy showers than usual, so you’ll need a light raincoat and a travel umbrella. As long as you’re prepared for the odd shower or two, you’ll be alright.

Australia

Get away from British wintertime by swapping it for summer down under! There are so many fabulous places to see. You can always catch a domestic flight or overnight Greyhound bus between destinations if there are a few Aussie spots on your bucket list.

Head over to Queensland to see the Great Barrier Reef, where you can see diverse sea life like the blue tang fish from a Glass Bottom Boat. There is the option to try out a bit of snorkelling in the reef, too. Whilst you’re in the area, enjoy breathtaking rainforest views from the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.

And if you can, the scenic railway that runs between Cairns and Kuranda is also well worth it. Chug through the leafy rainforest and see the impressive Barron Falls en route.

From tropical islands to desert landscapes and Aussie adventures, the opportunities for winter sun are out there waiting!
