Due to the popularity of Cancun, Tulum, and other Riviera Maya attractions, Los Cabos had played only a minor role in the Mexican tourism industry for many years. Sun-seekers who had been south of the border in the past, who were utterly fascinated with the Caribbean Sea’s crystal clarity and expanding resort industry, passed the place by despite its enormous potential.
As time passed, however, the Riviera Maya started to lose some of its appeals due to mass tourism and continued price increases, while “The Capes,” which include both Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, gained popularity as a much more laid-back alternative not yet overtaken by the masses.
As a result, it climbed up the rankings to become Mexico’s second most popular and fastest-growing seaside destination in 2022 and 2023, just behind Cancun.
From January to December 2022, 4.1 million passengers arrived at Los Cabos International, Baja California Sur’s main airport. That’s still far below Cancun’s total of 9.5 million, but this is when things get exciting.
Once again, it is evident that the 4.1 million mark is already 20% higher than the number registered in 2021. In terms of growth, the Capes are still on the rise. In other words, they have overtaken Cancun, Mexico City, and Puerto Vallarta as the Mexican destinations with the fastest growth.
In 2023, the number of tourists that arrived in Los Cabos was 4.5 million, which is a 12.50% increase compared to 2022. In Cancun, the number of tourist arrivals was 9.5 million in 2022 and 10.4 million in 2023, which is a 9.5% increase.
With a 32.6 percent increase in visitors during the Northern Hemisphere summer compared to the Caribbean hub’s far more modest 26.6 percent, Los Cabos was already showing signs that it was on track to surpass Cancun in terms of growth as of September 2022.
The abundance of opulent lodging options and distinctive experiences that Los Cabos has to offer-often combined with breathtaking natural beauty and close proximity to the beaches-helps to contribute to the city’s unique feeling. The twin cities, which have the “greatest presence” of healing resorts in the Americas, were recently crowned Mexico’s top wellness destination.
There’s no denying that Cabo has carved out a niche for itself in the high-end tourism industry, appealing to those who are not only willing to spend money on an all-inclusive vacation, but also expect some exclusivity and true relaxation. It may not be cheap, but there’s no denying that the high-quality service and relaxed atmosphere, as opposed to the chaotic party scene of the Riviera Maya, have helped the Capes.
How is the safety in Los Cabos?
Los Cabos is generally considered to be a safe destination for tourists. However, like any popular tourist destination, it is important to exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings. The local government and tourist industry have implemented various safety measures to ensure the safety of visitors, such as increased police presence and security at popular tourist spots.
It is important to take precautions such as not leaving valuables unattended, using reputable transportation services, and avoiding walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas. It is also recommended to stay informed about current safety issues by checking with your hotel or local authorities.
Overall, by taking common-sense precautions, visitors can enjoy a safe and enjoyable experience in Los Cabos.
