After reaching an agreement with government authorities, the Uber platform in Quintana Roo has begun testing the integration of taxi drivers into its application. However, they will do so in a differentiated way, i.e. the user will decide whether they want to order a private car or a taxi.
Users who use the application will see a new type of ride called “Uber Go” which explains that it is a taxi. It is expected that, with these new changes, conflicts with taxi drivers will come to an end.
Águeda Esperilla, the spokesperson for Uber drivers, expressed her hope for a more tranquil work environment, free from disruptions. Additionally, they are optimistic about the possibility of providing their services at Cancun International Airport (AIC) and fostering fair competition.
“We hope that the negotiations will go well for all parties involved. We have high expectations for the agreements and know that it is important to give users the choice between a cab and an Uber. We also hope that we can operate in all areas, including the airport,” she said in an interview with Por Esto!
Esperilla also explained that the C5 is testing the panic button, which will be integrated into the same platform and will ensure that the police arrive in less than 10 minutes when necessary.
“There are people from C5 who are randomly using Uber cars to test the panic buttons that are already connected to the surveillance system so that both drivers and users can be helped as quickly as possible and avoid conflicts of all kinds,” she explained.
Plan To Implement Taxi Meters
In response to numerous complaints, the State of Quintana Roo government has intervened to enhance the taxi experience for travelers in the area. Commencing next year, taxis across the region will be subject to regulated fares, and drivers will be obligated to upgrade their vehicles and deliver superior service to passengers.
The roll-out of taxi meters in Quintana Roo will occur in phases, with the initial implementation set for Benito Juárez, Solidaridad, Tulum, and Puerto Morelos. This move aims to streamline fare calculations and improve overall customer satisfaction in taxi travel.
