Las Vegas and Nevada have far more to offer than the bright lights of the Strip, massive casinos and hotels, and shows playing every night. Nevada is one of the most picturesque states in the US and has some incredible sights you can’t find anywhere else. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a day out. Here are the best day trips around Las Vegas.
If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a day out, there are a number of adventures you can go on that are only a few hours away from Las Vegas. Also, I have a blog post highlighting the reasons why you should not move to Las Vegas, make sure you read it.
Red Rock Canyon
Red Rock Canyon is a favored tourist destination for locals and visitors alike. Found just 17 miles south of Las Vegas, you are greeted by the unbelievable red mountains and gorgeous national park after a relatively short drive.
You are able to explore the canyon and park on foot; you can hike, go for a bicycle ride, or just sit and have a quiet picnic and watch the stars when the sun goes down.
Hoover Dam
The Hoover Dam is almost a national monument, and it isn’t surprising once you see it in person. The enormous 726-foot tall dam spans the Colorado River between Nevada and Arizona and is a popular destination for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
There are numerous viewing spots all across the dam and the surrounding area on either side of the river, and there are tours held throughout the day, which give you access to some of the most spectacular views.
Area 51
While you can’t access the top-secret parts of Area 51, you are still able to travel there and get relatively close. The area’s main attraction is all the alien-themed stores, restaurants, and monuments that you find around the area.
If you are a believer in aliens, or you just want to see what all the hype is about, you can’t go wrong with a day trip to Area 51.
Death Valley
Death Valley is unusual in the sense that there is nothing to see there besides mountains and valleys. Death Valley is called Death Valley due to the incredibly harsh conditions that make it nearly impossible for most things to survive.
Found to the West, just on the other side of the California border, Death Valley is not somewhere you want to spend the night, but it offers breath-taking views of scenery that could easily fit on another planet.
Laughlin
Found at the Southernmost tip of Nevada, Laughlin is a resort city inspired by Las Vegas. Dubbed as a mini Sin City, Laughlin has its own strip, multiple casinos and hotels, and even some of the same attractions.
While it is smaller, Laughlin doesn’t have the same packed feel as Las Vegas does, and visitors can spend the day exploring everything the mini-Vegas offers.
Reno
There are probably only two cities you think of when someone says “Nevada,” the first in Vegas, and the second is Reno. Found in the North of the state, Reno is home to many casinos and hotels and prides itself on being known as The Biggest Little City.
Reno is similar to Laughlin in a sense as it is also a miniature replica of Las Vegas, except it has its own unique sights and activities, such as the Reno Air Race.
Hollywood
You may not believe it, and it is a bit too far for some, but Hollywood is only a four-hour drive from the strip. If you wake up early enough, you can get to the Walk of Fame and back to Vegas in time for dinner.
You can go on a Hollywood tour, visit all the famous spots like the Hollywood sign, and see how the rich and famous live in one of the most star-studded areas in the world.
Valley of Fire
The Valley of Fire State Park is a 46,000-acre park that can be found 16 miles south of Overton and about a 50-minute drive from Las Vegas. The park is named after the stone that can be found there, which formed from shifting sand dunes over 150 million years ago.
Scientists have discovered ancient paintings and etchings on the walls and in the parks’ caves, with some dating back as far as 300 BC.
