The 2024 hurricane season is expected to be one of the worst in the last two decades, according to meteorological observations.
In a “normal” year, the season produces 14.4 named storms but this year, 23 are expected. Likewise, 7.2 hurricanes are produced but we’ll see no less than 11.
Five of those 11 hurricanes are forecast to fall into categories 3–4-5, according to experts at the University of Colorado.
Two weeks ago, the US State Department issued an alert for 7 Caribbean countries instructing Americans what to do in case of a hurricane landfall.
Those countries include Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Grenada, Barbados, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia.
Fortunately, it doesn’t mean your Caribbean holidays are entirely ruined.
According to FOX Forecast Center data, 7 Caribbean islands have been mostly safe from hurricanes over the last 170 years.
Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao haven’t experienced an important landfall in over 130 years.
The last time Trinidad and Tobago suffered the direct impact of a hurricane was in 1933. Although, in 2004 and 2005, the islands were mildly affected by hurricanes Ivan and Emily, respectively.
There’s more. There are two seven-sea color islands named San Andrés and Providencia that have only had two hurricanes since we have records. These territories are located near the Nicaraguan coast but they belong to Colombia.
Things can happen and any of these islands can eventually be in the path of a hurricane. But that’s not the rule.
“Of course, every island in the Caribbean can see hurricanes. However, [these islands] are south of what we call the ‘hurricane belt,’ [so they] aren’t prone to seeing tropical disturbances, hurricanes or tropical systems,” said FOX Weather Meteorologist Michael Estime.
Choosing the destination where you want to spend your Caribbean holidays during the hurricane season shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Unaware of the dangers and inconveniences, travelers might see their holidays ruined due to a lack of information and planning.
That was the case of Z. Libertador, who lamented the weather conditions his family found in the destination they chose a few years ago.
We “went to Miami Beach one October for a vacation, at a hotel on the beach. There was a huge rainstorm stuck over the whole south half of Florida. For four days and three nights, it was rainy and cold. We spent all that money to sit in the room and watch movies. We didn’t see the sun until we got in the cab to go back to the airport. Very disappointing,” he commented on June 3.
