Kentucky may not be what you imagine as a vacation destination. But, when it comes to family fun, Kentucky should not be overlooked. Whether you love country music, are a fan of bourbon, or are die-hards for baseball and horse racing, the Bluegrass State is sure to please you for your next family getaway. Here are four suggestions for you to consider for your next vacation! Here you have my favorite five things to do in Kentucky.
Things to Do in Kentucky
The Kentucky Derby
You cannot talk about Kentucky and leave off The Kentucky Derby. You don’t even have to be a lover of horse racing to get sucked into the major event of the year! Taking place on May 6th, 2017, you can easily nab Kentucky Derby ticket packages that are customizable for you and your entire family.
And while you are in the Louisville area, do check out all that the city has to offer beyond the Derby. You won’t be sorry you did!
Kentucky Horse Park
Continuing with the theme of horses, and perfect for folks who don’t wish to attend a horse race is the Kentucky Horse Park. Located in beautiful Lexington, this working farm and theme park has been open since 1978. There is an International Museum of the Horse which also happens to be an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute. There is plenty going on at the Horse Park from exhibitions, to shows, to races, and plenty of family memories to be created.
Mammoth Cave
In Mammoth Cave, Kentucky there is an amazing National Park with caverns that will blow you away. It is the world’s longest-known cave system and has around 400 miles of explored caves. The park is open year-round and the surface area is free to roam.
Tours into the caverns do carry a fee and range from $5-$20 per person. There are many tours to choose from and can easily fit into any family budget. With the number of tours they host, it can easily become a family destination to explore all that the park has to offer. Do check out their campsites as well! Camping onsite can allow for extra tours on each vacation.
Corvette Museum
Did you know that in Bowling Green, there is the world’s only Corvette Assembly Plant? Well, now you do! In addition, there is the Corvette Museum which opened in 1994 and sits on 55 acres. In addition to the plant, which offers tours Monday through Friday, there is also a Motorsports Park.
Not only can you ride in a Corvette, but you can also take a high-performance driving test and sit in on many motorsports events that happen throughout the year. There are group rates available for groups of 15 or more, and this is certainly a must-see for the family that loves quality sports cars!
Big South Fork Scenic Railway
There is nothing more exciting to kids of all ages than a railway. And Big South Fork Scenic Railway will not disappoint. Located in Stearns, this railway offers everything from romantic trips to rugged rides for the entire family.
There are daily rides, as well as major events for different seasons, and packages that combine a ride with an outdoor event. There is so much here to choose from, you won’t be sorry that you set out on your own rail adventure.
Conclusion
Kentucky has lots to offer the family that wants to travel with kids without overspending their budget. It is the perfect getaway for the baseball fan, the bourbon connoisseur, the sports car fanatic, and the horse lover. If you are the outdoorsy type or the glam-per, Kentucky has you covered!
