Ahold Delhaize Grocery Chains Hit by New Cybersecurity Issue

Shoppers at several major U.S. grocery chains are facing website outages after parent company Ahold Delhaize announced Monday that it is dealing with a security issue within its network. The company took some systems offline as a precaution, and the disruption affected customers across its U.S. and international banners alike.

Ahold Delhaize USA oversees five grocery banners: Hannaford, Stop & Shop, Giant Food, Food Lion and The Giant Company. All five of their websites were down Monday morning. Overseas, three of the company's banners based in the Netherlands, Albert Heijn, Etos and Gall & Gall, were also down as of Monday morning.

When Grocery Dive contacted ADUSA for more information, the company said it had nothing further to add beyond its Monday press release and could not say when its systems would be restored. The press release did not address whether in-store operations were affected, but the company said all of its physical stores remain open.

This is not the first time Ahold Delhaize has had to grapple with a cybersecurity problem. In late 2024, the company dealt with an incident that potentially exposed sensitive information belonging to more than 2 million people. That breach also forced systems offline, caused outages on banner websites, and temporarily suspended Hannaford's e-commerce services. At the time, the company said the exposed data likely included information tied to current and former employees along with their dependents and beneficiaries, but probably not customer payment details or pharmacy records.

As your consumer watchdog, this site's reporter has long urged readers to stay alert whenever a major retailer reports a network problem, since these incidents can sometimes lead to follow-up scams targeting worried customers. Until Ahold Delhaize provides more details, shoppers should treat any unexpected emails, texts or calls claiming to be from these grocery banners with caution.
