In the leadup to Super Bowl 54, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes never channeled his inner Joe Namath and made a bold guarantee ahead of a highly-anticipated showdown with Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers.
Well, there was no public guarantee. A recent profile on Mahomes revealed that the 2018 NFL MVP made a promise, of sorts, right before he engineered the Chiefs’ late comeback.
Patrick Mahomes all but guaranteed a comeback in Super Bowl 54 after a fourth-quarter interception
For most of Super Bowl 54, Mahomes looked human and beatable. The 49ers intercepted Mahomes in the third quarter and embarked on a seven-play, 55-yard scoring drive. San Francisco took a 20-10 lead with 17:35 remaining in regulation.
Mahomes led the Chiefs down the field on their next drive and prepared for 3rd-and-6 at San Francisco’s 23. 49ers safety Tarvarius Moore snagged an errant pass at the 49ers’ 13-yard line, however, ending the Chiefs’ scoring aspirations.
According to The Athletic, Mahomes’ teammates and coaches offered words of encouragement on the sidelines. The publication included the quote, “Hey, stay aggressive, keep firing,” but it is not known if that was a collection of comments the quarterback heard or if a specific and unnamed person made that remark.
Mahomes reportedly told an unnamed figure to get away from him. As for the idea that he needed to stay aggressive and keep firing,” the star quarterback offered a nine-word rebuttal.
“What else do you think I’m going to do?”
Patrick Mahomes
Those are the words that every Chiefs fan is likely glad to read. We also apologize to the 49ers and their fans.
Mahomes dominated once he got the ball back that night
The Chiefs wanted Mahomes to stay aggressive. He more than did his part when he got the ball back with 8:53 left in the fourth quarter.
On 3rd-and-15, Mahomes famously connected with a wide-open Tyreek Hill at the 49ers’ 21-yard line. Minutes after intercepting Mahomes, Moore’s pass interference penalty on 3rd-and-10 gave the Chiefs 1st-and-goal at the 49ers’ 1-yard line.
Mahomes, as he did eight times previously during the 2019 regular season and playoffs, hit tight end Travis Kelce for a touchdown. Suddenly, the 49ers only had a 20-17 lead, and we know how the rest of the game went.
Mahomes remained aggressive on the Chiefs’ next offensive drive and had a 38-yard connection with veteran wideout Sammy Watkins with under four minutes left. Running back Damien Williams caught a go-ahead touchdown with 2:50 left, and the Chiefs took a 24-20 lead.
You can stop reading here, 49ers fans.
Kansas City’s defense sacked Garopolo and 4th-and-10 on the Chiefs’ 49-yard line with 1:33 left. Williams ran for a 38-yard touchdown two plays later, Chiefs cornerback Kyle Fuller intercepted Garoppolo with 1:08 left, and that was it.
Mahomes, who earned Super Bowl MVP honors, finished 26-of-42 for 286 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. He stayed aggressive, kept firing, and wound up celebrating with the Lombardi Trophy when the night ended.
Mahomes and the Chiefs should remain a Super Bowl threat for the years to come
As we know, there was no repeat title for Mahomes and teammates last season. Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers routed the Chiefs, 31-9, in Super Bowl 55.
Something tells us this won’t be the last we see of Mahomes in the Big Game. He’s 26 years old and under contract through the end of the 2031 season. The Chiefs are committed to him, both financially and in terms of trying to put the right pieces around him.
Barring any injuries or unexpected departures, Mahomes should have Hill and Kelce at his disposal in the coming years. That trio is more than enough to keep the Chiefs competing for AFC championships and a yearly spot in the Super Bowl.
Our advice to the rest of the league? Don’t let Mahomes make any guarantees, because he’s going to do everything he can to accomplish his mission.
