Why the Checks Are Going Out
The White House calls this a refund. It says the Biden administration let health exchanges charge extra "user fees" that got passed on to shoppers as higher monthly premiums.
Now the Trump administration wants to give some of that money back. Officials frame it as part of a bigger push to lower health costs for everyday people.
"President Trump is delivering on promises to lower costs for American patients... taking on big health insurance companies, drug manufacturers and other corporate giants," the White House said.
Why Premiums Got So High
Last year, Congress let extra help for ACA premiums expire. That help is called "enhanced subsidies." Without them, many people's monthly bills went way up.
Because of this, some people switched to cheaper, skimpier plans. Others just stopped buying insurance completely.
A KFF poll taken in February and March found 80% of returning ACA members said their costs, like premiums or copays, were higher than the year before.
Larry Levitt of KFF says the $500 checks will mostly help "middle-income people who lost subsidies... and are now paying in many cases thousands of dollars more."
The Bigger Money Picture
This isn't the only cash promise from Trump this week. He also said he'd send a $5,000 payment to every adult in America if Republicans hold onto Congress after the midterms.
Both moves land as money worries grow. A CBS News poll from July found three out of four people, out of nearly 2,200 surveyed, say their paycheck isn't keeping up with inflation.
