Jared Goff is ready to end the NFL's most embarrassing streak and extract his revenge on the Rams in one afternoon

Former Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff is coming home, and he has plenty he wants to accomplish upon landing in California.

The Rams traded Goff, the No 1 overall pick in 2016, to the Detroit Lions earlier this year in a deal that sent Matthew Stafford to Los Angeles. Not only would an upset victory likely keep the two-time Pro Bowler smiling upon returning to the Motor City, but it’d help him end what continues to be arguably the NFL’s most embarrassing streak.

In four seasons with Sean McVay as his head coach on the Rams, Goff went 42-20, tossed 102 touchdowns to 48 interceptions, and reached the postseason three times. Most teams would take numbers like that from their quarterback, and they’d certainly want to reach the Divisional Round thrice.

The relationship didn’t end with a Super Bowl ring or an amicable divorce. In fact, McVay recently said he wished there was “better, clearer communication” between the head coach and quarterback leading up to the trade, which was agreed upon in January and made official less than two months later.

According to ProFootballTalk, Goff responded to McVay’s comments during a recent press conference. Although the seventh-year quarterback is excited to see people from the Rams organization, he’s not shying away from what the showdown will mean. 

“Of course you have the chip on your shoulder — I’ve spoken about that. There was some disrespect felt toward the end. There was some sourness toward the end. And you still feel that, you still have that chip on your shoulder.”

Goff is 0-13 in his career without McVay as his head coach. When he’s had Jeff Fisher, John Fassel, and Dan Campbell leading the way, his teams have been outscored 393-214.

“I’m going to play the game just how I would any other game,” Goff said of his upcoming trip to Los Angeles. “And to be honest, I’m not worried about feeling some type of way once the game starts. I really don’t.”

The fact that Goff remains winless without McVay as his head coach remains possibly the NFL’s most embarrassing and baffling streak. Even New York Jets fans, who haven’t seen their team reach the postseason since January 2011, might feel compelled to point and laugh at someone else’s misery for once.

Not all of that is on Goff, especially not as he’s watched his defense fall apart in last-minute losses to the Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings this year. But he also hasn’t helped matters or risen to the occasion in ways that are expected of a quarterback selected first overall.

Things won’t get any easier against a dangerous 5-1 Rams team. First-year defensive coordinator Raheem Morris’ unit is only allowing 21.2 points per game, the ninth-best margin in the league. All-Pro defensive lineman Aaron Donald has 3.5 sacks, and veteran pass-rusher Leonard Floyd has a team-high 4.5 quarterback takedowns.

Third-year safety Taylor Rapp and All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey lead an intimidating secondary, one which is capable of giving Goff fits all afternoon. The raucous crowd at SoFi Stadium will likely make it clear how much they prefer Stafford to Goff.

Goff is going to need to play the game of his life if he wants to take down the Rams. If McVay had any belief the California product was capable of something like that, he wouldn’t have traded for Stafford in the first place.

A disappointing performance could clinch an early end to Goff’s tenure in Detroit

In terms of counting stats, Goff is apace to complete 66.8% of his passes for nearly 4,300 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 10 touchdowns. In 2021, both in terms of the 17-game season and how much the game has changed, those would be excellent numbers for a rookie quarterback like Trevor Lawrence or a bridge quarterback on a cheap salary.

We can’t say the same thing for a seventh-year quarterback who is playing on a four-year contract worth $134 million. Although he hasn’t played terribly to begin his Lions career, Goff has been far too pedestrian on a rebuilding team trying to find its new franchise quarterback.

Campbell has already publicly said he needs Goff to “step up” at quarterback. If the veteran plays poorly against his old team, the Lions may be tempted to consider switching quarterbacks soon. David Blough, a 26-year-old backup, has thrown 10 passes since the start of last season.

At 27 years old, Goff still has plenty of time to figure things out career-wise. As for his time with the Lions? However, Detroit has two first-round picks in 2022 and might feel compelled to use one on a quarterback. Ole Miss standout Matt Corral is currently an early candidate to go first overall in next year’s draft. If the team instead waits and uses the Rams’ pick, they could opt for Liberty’s Malik Willis or North Carolina’s Sam Howell, depending on how far they potentially fall.

Meanwhile, Stafford has the Rams looking like a team ready to win the Super Bowl for the first time since January 2000. Even if Goff gets his revenge in Week 7, his former franchise is on track to get the last laugh. Given both teams’ trajectories, though, we expect the Rams to get some cackles in against their one-time quarterback.
