The New England Patriots are synonymous with winning. Behind the greatness of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, the franchise won six Super Bowls between 2001 and 2018. Darrelle Revis was part of the 2014 Patriots Super Bowl team. However, the All-Pro cornerback revealed some interesting thoughts about his former coach and team.
Darrelle Revis won a Super Bowl with the Patriots
Darrelle Revis spent his first six seasons in the NFL with the New York Jets. Then, he played one season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before ending up with New England in 2014.
Revis, a former first-round draft pick out of Pittsburgh, had already established himself as one of the league’s elite cover corners. The term “Revis Island” represented his elite man coverage skills and the idea that opposing quarterbacks rarely targeted him.
The Aliquippa, Pennsylvania native was a fantastic pickup for Bill Belichick and the Patriots. Revis started all 16 regular-season games and throughout the postseason. He led the team in pass breakups (14) and tied for first in interceptions (2).
New England defeated Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks in a thrilling 28-24 victory in Super Bowl XLIX. Revis recorded one tackle, one sack, and one quarterback hit in the win.
The 2014 season was the cornerback’s lone campaign with the Patriots, but he made it count.
The former All-Pro is not a fan of Bill Belichick
You cannot debate Darrelle Revis’ greatness. He should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame one day. He solidified himself as one before he even arrived in New England.
There’s a reason Revis wanted out, even after winning the Super Bowl with the Patriots. He was a guest on the I AM ATHLETE podcast and spoke about his experience playing under Bill Belichick in New England.
“That’s not my guy,” said Revis when asked about his former head coach. “We won Super Bowl 49, but that’s not my guy.”
The seven-time Pro Bowler revealed why he preferred playing for ex-Jets head coach Rex Ryan over Belichick. “It’s two different coaching philosophies,” Revis said. “Rex is a little bit more loose…It’s a lot of news going on right now with Bill. The way that he runs his ship is a little bit different.”
Although not a fan of Belichick personally, Revis gave the Patriots head coach some credit. “I do give him credit for winning so many Super Bowls and having the longevity to do it,” he said.
He doubled down on his take, though, saying that Tom Brady is having a lot more fun playing under Bruce Arians in Tampa Bay. “He’s having the best time of his career,” said the retired defensive back.
Revis suggested he’s not the only player who didn’t care for Bill Belichick’s coaching style.
Revis says nobody likes playing in New England
Darrelle Revis’ tenure in New England was short-lived. He shed more insight into what it’s like to play for that organization.
“When you play with the New England Patriots, it’s a lot of pressure every time you walk in the door,” he said. “It’s a lot of tension…It’s the unknown. You don’t know what Mr. Kraft’s doing, and you don’t know what Bill’s doing.”
The four-time All-Pro mentioned the infamous Spygate and Deflategate scandals and how the coach’s reputation can hurt the players.
I AM ATHLETE co-host Channing Crowder asked Revis if he enjoyed his time with the Patriots. “No, I did not,” he responded. “I’m happy for the grind and the hustle of winning Super Bowl 49. But waking up every day and walking into the facility, and having to deal with the tension…There are other philosophies to win.”
The 36-year-old said playing in New England is “a little bit strenuous” and suggested he’s not alone in that sentiment.
“Nobody likes it in the locker room,” he added. “Walking in there tense every day, you’re substituting winning games. That’s what they sell. They sell winning games up there. That’s what they do. It works.”
Revis’ account doesn’t paint Bill Belichick as a players’ coach, and that’s no surprise. The Patriots want to win but have yet to prove they can do so without TB12.
