Pennsylvanians turn out in droves for the primary election

Just one in four registered Republicans and Democrats in Pennsylvania cast a vote in the state’s 2024 presidential primary, according to unofficial data compiled by PoliticsPA.

Only 12 of the Commonwealth’s 67 counties saw turnout that exceeded 30 percent, headlined by Wyoming County that saw 34.63 percent of its 5,350 registered voters go to the poll or mail in a ballot.

Clarion (33.48%) and Forest (33.26%) also topped the one-third mark in our unofficial collection of data from county election websites or the PA Department of State.

The only “population center” that surpassed the 30% plateau was Bucks County at 31.63 percent. Much of that turnout could be contributed to the Republican Congressional primary between Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick and challenger Mark Houck.

In fact, contested races seemed to play a large role in turnout, as Lancaster (29.04%), Cumberland (27.18%), Allegheny (26.85%) and Westmoreland (26.57%) all reached the 1-in-4 mark.

State House Minority Leader Rep Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) held off Dave Nissley in HD-100 in southern Lanco; Janelle Stelson outdistanced five other challengers for the Democratic nomination for Congress in PA-10 in Cumberland; Rep. Summer Lee (D-12) defeated Bhavini Patel to earn the Democratic nomination in PA-12 in Allegheny County, while Westmoreland had a contested primary in PA-14 that finds Chris Dziados in the lead over Ken Bach.

Philadelphia County had the lowest voter turnout among the counties where information is available, as just 17.69 percent of eligible voters cast ballots in the City of Brotherly Love.
