Known for its beaches, lagoons, and reefs, Mauritius, an Indian Ocean island nation east of Madagascar. It is known for its biodiversity of flora and fauna and interesting fact it was the only known home of the now distinct dodo bird.
Along with its fantastic beauty, the island nation is also home to a mesmerizing underwater ‘waterfall’ that is truly a spectacular sight. Made possible by a submarine plateau, known as the Mascarene Plateau, Mauritius is one of the few places to see such an amazing geological sight.
This unusual underwater ‘waterfall’ was created only eight million years ago and whilst this might seem quite a long time ago, the Mascarene Plateau is one of the newest major features on our planet.
As the small island is situated on an ocean shelf above the ocean floor, there is a sudden 2.5-mile drop to the ocean floor creating this ‘waterfall’. While to the eye it seems like a waterfall, it is actually an optical illusion formed by sand and silt deposits.
This illusion can only be seen in the sky on the southwestern coast of the island known as Le Morne Peninsula. In the picturesque turquoise lagoon and surrounding crystal clear water, the unique blend of the shades of the deposits create the illusion of a mesmerizing cascading waterfall.
The island is almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs and is volcanic in origin boasting a maritime subtropical climate, luxury accommodations, and unparalleled nature. It is home to luxury properties such as Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita, The Oberoi Beach Resort, Mauritius and One&Only Le Saint Géran along with other luxurious boutique hotels.
From diving to snorkeling to relaxing on the beaches, the island nation is as close to a paradise as one can find. Some of the sights to see include the capital city of Port Louis, Bel Ombre Nature Reserve and the Botanic Gardens.
