It’s hard to believe that your little one is growing up so fast. But before you know it, your cuddly baby will be ready for her first steps. So what should you have prepared ahead of time? The following list covers the essentials.
While your baby will need a lot of things before it learns, there are four main items that you’ll definitely want to have on hand for this phase in its life:
1. A safe place to do it
Great, sturdy baby gates are essential if you don’t want your precious one going off exploring potentially dangerous rooms while you’re cooking dinner or taking a shower, climb over the top of any safety barriers, and get down to the business of learning to walk!
2. Get walking aids
If you want to get out and about while your baby is still little, a stroller comes in really handy. At this stage, your child will need both the support of the stroller seat backrest and also an aid for extra steadiness. That’s why it’s important that you familiarize yourself with the different types of walking aids available so that you can choose one that suits your needs.

Walkers have been proven to be potentially unsafe as they can cause delays in motor skills that your child should learn. Get down to their level and clap your hands or sing a song when they get up off the floor, it’ll be hard at first, but persistence will pay off in the end!
4. A good pair of shoes
Consider investing in a pair of baby shoes to protect the feet and cushion any falls. Whether you choose leather or fabric shoes, keep in mind that they should offer your child enough space to move their toes around freely and not be too tight. You can buy light-weight infant slip-on shoes with one strap for easy access and Velcro fastenings, so if you’ve got an active walker on your hands it’s better than buckles or laces!

Encourage walking as it stimulates the muscles and develops strength and balance, which is very important. Walking helps to boost their self-confidence and independence, as well as develop social skills such as sharing.
