Flying to Hilton Head
Traveling to Hilton Head Island is not difficult, especially if you intend to fly to Hilton Head. There is a major international airport approximately 45 miles from the island, and several airlines have direct flights to the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Hilton Head Island Airport is a smaller airport located on the island itself, and several major airlines offer connecting flights to this airport if you’d rather fly directly to Hilton Head rather than have to drive from Savannah/Hilton Head International. This guide will help you decide which path is the best for your traveling needs.
Airline Service to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport
Most people who fly to Hilton Head Island go through Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport because there are more direct flights to this airport than to the smaller one located on the island. While there are some airlines that offer additional direct flights to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport on weekends, you can fly direct to the airport from these cities during the week:
- Albany
- Allentown
- Atlanta
- Baltimore
- Boston
- Charlotte
- Chicago/O’Hare
- Cincinnati
- Cleveland
- Columbus
- Dallas/Fort Worth
- Denver
- Detroit
- Grand Rapids
- Houston
- Indianapolis
- Los Angeles
- Lexington
- Louisville
- Miami
- Minneapolis/St. Paul
- Nashville
- Newark
- New York City – LaGuardia
- New York City Airport – JFK
- Niagara Falls
- Philadelphia
- Pittsburgh
- Portsmouth
- Providence
- Toronto
- Washington D.C. – Dulles
- Washington D.C. – Reagan National
Several of these cities only offer direct flights to Hilton Head only on a seasonal basis, so you’ll only be able to get a flight from Albany, Columbus, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis, Louisville, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Providence in the late spring, summer, and fall. But these are the most popular times to visit Hilton Head, so if you’re planning a typical family trip to the island, you’ll probably be able to get a direct flight from these cities.
Hilton Head Island Airport
As previously mentioned, you can fly directly onto the island, but you’ll have to make a connection at a major airport to get one of these flights. It can be more convenient for some travelers, though, because the Hilton Head Island Airport is located just five miles from all major resorts. You probably won’t need a rental car if you fly into Hilton Head Island Airport, which can be a nice advantage to flying into the more distant Savannah/Hilton International Airport. But if you plan to rent a car you should also consider Savannah airport parking.
Airlines that fly into Hilton Head Island Airport are American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Airlines, but you’ll have to make a connecting flight through one of the following major airports:
- Charlotte, North Carolina (American Airlines)
- Washington D. C. – Reagan National (American Airlines)
- Washington D. C. – Dulles (United Airlines)
- Chicago/O’Hare, Illinois (United Airlines)
- Newark, New Jersey (United Airlines)
- Atlanta, Georgia (Delta Airlines)
- New York City – LaGuardia (Delta Airlines)
Conclusion
As you can see, there are plenty of options for flying to Hilton Head Island if you want to fly there. You can also choose to drive to Hilton Head by way of I-95 and Highway 278. The route to Hilton Head is well-marked, so the chance of getting lost on the way is small. Whichever way you end up traveling to Hilton Head, you’re sure to have a fantastic time once you’re there!
