Indigo Hotel Athens Georgia More Than Just a Hotel

I started planning our romantic getaway to Georgia, Athens was a must-go-to spot. And interestingly enough, my husband – who is an academic, arranged a meeting with someone at the university in his field, so it was dually beneficial. I got to visit this town that I’ve heard so much about, and my husband had a meeting that can help move him forward in his field. Love how that works out.  So, now that I knew we are going to Athens, it was time to figure out where to stay. That was where working with the Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau came into play. Rachel was so helpful and directed me to one of the coolest hotels in the area. The Indigo Hotel Athens

Athens, Georgia has been on my radar since my university years. For two reasons:

  • REM was one of my favorite bands and I knew that Michael Stipe, at one point, invested a lot of money into making this little town more music and art-oriented. And thanks to him and other musicians, it was really well known for its music scene. Still is, even though he doesn’t have that much influence there anymore.
  • I was actually accepted to the University of Georgia and seriously considered going there at one point. But one thing led to another, and I decided to be closer to my family.

Indigo Hotel Athens Georgia

Athens in itself is a tiny town. The majority of the people visiting are parents, relatives, and friends of the students. Not a huge tourist hub. There are plenty of hotels to choose from but staying in such an artsy town I wanted to get the feel of the place through a unique hotel. In other words, I didn’t want to stay in a chain.

Why Hotel Indigo Athens was a perfect choice.

1. The hotel focuses on the strong points of the town. Yes, every hotel here directs their energy to some degree on the above-mentioned visitors, but few really pinpoint on the true essence of this place. The Art and Music Scene which is as strong as it ever was when R.E.M and the B 52’s, and many other bands still dominate the market here.

That’s exactly what Hotel Indigo does. It is one of the most influential, supportive places in the city for artists to display their work. With an art gallery. Tons of events are planned with them.

And they obviously get the right clientele. While we were visiting, Gregg Allman, of the Allman Brothers Band, was in town doing a show, and guess where he and his crew stayed?

2. Green Hotel – Hotel Indigo is actually internationally known for its green design and practices. (More below on their Green policies and features.) Working with aspiring architects and world innovators in the Green and Sustainable world, the hotel has been written up in journals and newspapers all over the world, setting an example for many others to follow.

3. Modern and Luxury – the little time my husband and I get away, I always love to stay in upper-end hotels. We stayed on the Penthouse Floor, which is only the 4th floor, but the views of town were great. Plus, the room was spacious, bright, and extremely comfortable.

4. Close to town – pretty much everything is close to town in Athens. The whole town itself is maybe several blocks in each direction. However, what I liked about it was that it was walking distance to everything, but yet away from the bar and nightlife scene, so you don’t hear any of the noise.
