If you follow NBA players on Twitter, you have likely gotten used to their profile pictures. For the longest time, LeBron James had an image of his younger self before eventually featuring his family in the photo. Giannis Antetokounmpo, on the other hand, has a picture of himself in that spot. Stephen Curry, though, has an image of an ape.

Yes, an ape.

So, why does Curry have that as his Twitter picture instead of a photo of himself or his family? Here’s what we know about it.

Stephen Curry has a massive social media following

Stephen Curry has become one of the most popular players in the NBA. The two MVPs and three championships on his resume have certainly helped him in that aspect, but his online presence plays a large role as well.

Curry has 15.6 million Twitter followers and a whopping 37.4 million on Instagram. He’s not someone like Kevin Durant who talks trash to fans online, but his posts give everyone an inside look at his life.

Compared to other NBA stars, LeBron James has 50.3 million Twitter followers and 102 million on Instagram; Kevin Durant has 19.3 million on Twitter and 12.4 million on Instagram; Antetokounmpo has two million Twitter followers and 10.9 million on Instagram, and James Harden has 7.2 million on Twitter and 11.6 million on Instagram.

The size of their followings means that many people probably notice when their profile pictures change. And Curry likely threw millions of his fans off when he changed his picture this summer.

Why does Stephen Curry have an ape as his Twitter picture?

As of Nov. 12, 2021, Stephen Curry has an ape as his Twitter picture. So, why is that the case?

According to Markets Insider, Curry bought a non-fungible token (NFT) from Bored Ape Yacht Club in August for approximately $180,000, or 55 ether. His profile picture is an image of that NFT.

OK, so what does any of that mean? Many of you might not know what an NFT or an ether is (I’m not even 100% sure that I do), but here’s the best way to explain it.

According to The Verge, “non-fungible” means no one can replace an NFT with something else, compared to something like bitcoin, which is fungible. You can trade a bitcoin and receive the exact same thing you just had, but NFTs are essentially like trading cards that are one-of-a-kind. Many NFTS are in the ethereum blockchain, which is a cryptocurrency like bitcoin. An ether is a token within that blockchain.

So, Curry used 55 ether to buy an NFT from Bored Ape Yacht Club, which has 10,000 unique ape NFTs within the ethereum blockchain. Markets Insider reported in August that Bored Ape Yacht Club had sold apes for an average of 24.99 ether, which is approximately $79,000, and had “$419 million worth of volume transactions.”

Other NBA stars have apes as their Twitter pictures

All in all, Stephen Curry is essentially using his Twitter picture to show off his unique NFT. But he isn’t the only NBA player doing so.

Tobias Harris is also in the club, and in October, he tweeted eye emojis along with “#apefollowape,” while Josh Hart posted “Yessir!!! Ape Gang!” when he joined in June.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club seems like an exclusive group, but with the rapid growth of NFTs this past year, there’s likely a good chance we will see other NBA stars join Curry and company in the future.
