Jerry Jones' brainless decision to ignore Mike McCarthy's atrocious playoff performance spells trouble for the Cowboys' future

The Dallas Cowboys have become somewhat infamous for their embarrassing playoff losses over the past two decades or so. However, during Sunday night’s loss against the San Francisco 49ers, they hit a new low. Jerry Jones and everyone in attendance looked on, perplexed, as the Cowboys dialed up a QB draw down seven with 14 seconds remaining in the game.

Dak Prescott and the Cowboys offense failed to line up fast enough, and Prescott spiked the ball into the ground a full half-second after the game clock expired.

Would the Cowboys have been able to tie the game up on a last-second hail mary? No, probably not. However, the point is that they weren’t even able to try. It looked like they were either content with the seven-point loss or just flat-out unaware of how much time was left on the clock.

Mike McCarthy and the rest of the Cowboys coaching staff deserve the most blame

There’s an argument that Prescott should have slid earlier or done a better job of getting the line set again before snapping the ball. However, the overarching reality here is that a QB draw with zero timeouts remaining should never have been called in the first place.

Dallas should have been exclusively throwing toward the sideline or solely taking deep shots toward the end zone. Instead, they drew up the one play they should never have called in that scenario.

This falls on the coaching staff. This was a ridiculous instance of not understanding the moment between offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and head coach Mike McCarthy. Whether it was Moore or McCarthy who made the final decision to run a QB draw, the world may never know. However, McCarthy is the head coach, so he ultimately deserves the most blame.

Jerry Jones is seemingly ignoring Mike McCarthy’s role in the loss

Outside of that ugly final play, the Cowboys looked undisciplined and unfocused throughout most of the loss. They finished the day with 14 penalties and 98 penalty yards, which comes back to McCarthy and his inability to perform in big moments.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was expressively upset after the loss, pointing out that the team he assembled was too talented not to experience success. However, when asked about the future of McCarthy following such an abysmal coaching performance, Jones brushed off the idea of considering a coaching change.

“I don’t even want to discuss anything like that at this particular time. No discussion about anything,” Jones said. “I’m not going to discuss coaching, preparation, any of those things. That is not on the table.”

Jerry Jones needs to be brutally honest about the future of the Cowboys

Jerry Jones is a very proud individual, and his ego has long been a significant problem in Dallas. This feels like another example of that taking place.

Jones was criticized up, down, left, and right when he first hired McCarthy to coach his football team. Firing him after just two seasons would be an admission of failure — something Jones isn’t accustomed to doing.

However, if Jones wants his team to get over the hump and perform like a contender, he needs to be brutally honest regarding why the Cowboys lost on Sunday. They are more talented than the 49ers — they were simply outcoached.

That falls on McCarthy. Ultimately speaking, it also falls on Jones for being the man who employs McCarthy.
