When the 2021 NFL season began, Eric Weddle did not think he would be playing for any team, let alone in the Super Bowl. Well, that’s precisely what happened.
The Los Angeles Rams lured the six-time Pro Bowl safety out of retirement to join them on their playoff run. Weddle played surprisingly well, and his presence helped Sean McVay’s squad take home the Lombardi Trophy. With a Super Bowl victory added to his resume, Weddle retired from the NFL for a second time.
Weddle has nothing left to prove in the league, and he’s ready to begin the next chapter of his football life.
Eric Weddle was recently hired as a high school football coach
Although Eric Weddle is officially calling it quits from the NFL, he’s not completely walking away from the game. The Fontana, California native will be sticking to the gridiron, but this time as a high school football coach.
Weddle recently accepted a position as the head coach at Rancho Bernando High School in San Diego. The school announced the LA Rams defensive back would be taking over the reins via its Facebook page.
The 37-year-old has strong ties to the San Diego community. He spent nine of his 14 NFL seasons playing for the San Diego Chargers.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to coach high school football,” Weddle told The San Diego Union-Tribune. “To have the chance to teach, coach, and inspire these kids to be GREAT on and off the field through football is what I’m most excited for. I have huge shoes to fill from Coach T, and I am up for the challenge. I will not let him or Principal Hans Becker and AD Tracey Stowe down.”
After years playing football professionally, Eric Weddle will be responsible for leading these young men on and off the gridiron.
The 6-time Pro Bowler retired again after winning Super Bowl with the Rams
Eric Weddle initially retired from the NFL after the 2019 season. He started all 16 games for the LA Rams that year after playing the previous three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens.
The Pro Bowl safety was enjoying his retirement when Rams general manager Les Snead came calling. LA had lost starting strong safety and defensive signal-caller Jordan Fuller to a season-ending injury. Free safety Taylor Rapp also went down in the Week 18 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Weddle was already familiar with the organization, so he seemed like a good person to reach out to. Fortunately for Sean McVay and the Rams, the veteran defensive back kept himself in great shape by playing pickup basketball at his house.
Defensive coordinator Raheem Morris quickly acclimated Weddle into the unit. By the NFC Championship Game, he played 100% of the defensive snaps. Weddle wasn’t just a placeholder, either. Instead, he held his own on the field. He finished the postseason with 18 tackles.
Eric Weddle’s second stint in the NFL was short, but he went out on top as a Super Bowl champion.
Weddle seems to be retired for good this time
Eric Weddle probably could not have dreamt of a better way to end his NFL career. When he retired the first time, he wasn’t a Super Bowl champion. The LA Rams didn’t even make the playoffs that year.
Weddle’s playing career wasn’t the smoothest ride. When playing for the Chargers, he became one of the most consistent safeties in the league. However, the franchise undervalued his impact toward the end of his tenure in San Diego.
The three-time All-Pro selection didn’t like how things ended, but he soon found a new home with the Baltimore Ravens and later with the Rams.
Weddle’s NFL career was an incredible journey, and the Super Bowl victory was the icing on the cake. Now, he has nothing left to prove. He suffered a torn pectoral muscle in the win over the Cincinnati Bengals. He admitted he was feeling the effects of the injury and that this was the end of the road for him.
“Yes, I’m re-retiring,” Weddle said per NFL.com‘s Kevin Patra. “I’ll go back to my daily life. Pretty banged up right now, but hey, it’s well worth it. I have a lot of time to recover. World champs, man.”
Eric Weddle went out a champion. Now, he’ll try to continue to the winning culture at Rancho Bernando High School.
