Good morning politicos, here’s the buzz. The latest PA Prez poll; new info from the AFL-CIO puts the number of voters without ID at 1.6mil; more “you didn’t build that” attacks today; and a pro-Obama group has released an Olympic ad.
PA Republicans Build That Meme: Damn the context, full speed ahead! The Romney campaign and Republicans continued their assault on President Obama’s recent “you didn’t build that” remarks in the state Capitol and across PA via a series of press conferences featured candidates and business owners.
Are There More than 758,000 PA Voters Without ID?: New information compiled by the AFL-CIO shows that not only do more than 1 percent of people lack ID, as previously estimated by the Corbett administration, but that the number may be even higher than the 9.2 percent estimate: as high as 20 percent, or 1.6 million voters.
Pitts Staffer One of DC’s “Most Beautiful”: The Hill’s annual “50 Most Beautiful” list includes Rep. Joe Pitts staffer Brian Bosak, a legislative assistant who handles business, financial and values issues. Though not a PA native, Bosak represents the Keystone State well. Two others who called PA home also made the list.
Priorities USA Torches Romney in Olympic Ad (Watch Video): Priorities USA Action released a new ad today ripping into Mitt Romney for outsourcing and his offshore bank accounts. The ad, “Romney’s Gold” is airing in four states, including Pennsylvania, and precedes Romney’s visit to London to attend the Olympics.
Public Policy Polling: Obama 49, Romney 43 in PA: Public Policy Polling’s new Presidential polls have the President with a 6-point lead over challenger Mitt Romney in Pennsylvania. The last poll conducted by PPP in the state was in May, which had Obama at 50, Romney at 42.
Team Romney’s PA “Build That” Blitz: Mitt Romney’s campaign is launching a full court national press over Obama’s “you didn’t build that” remarks, featuring local surrogates, business owners, and the campaign bus. Here are the events they plan for PA.
Eaton Wins Dems’ Congressional Keystone Challenge: The PA Dems ran an online contest for their candidates in PA’s 18 congressional districts. The winner: Missa Eaton, challenging Rep. Mike Kelly. The prize: a fundraising email likely worth a few thousand bucks.
Legislative Election Updates
SD-29: Former State Rep. Tim Seip, running on the Dem ticket for Senate, will hold a formal announcement and press event at 1 p.m. July 29 with U.S. Rep. Tim Holden and State Rep. Neal Goodman (D-Schuylkill) at North End Fire Company in Pine Grove. Seip is running against Sen. David Argall (R-Schuylkill).
SD-40: North Pittsburgh Politics dinged GOP candidate Rep. Randy Vulakovich (R-Allegheny). Vulakovich sent out mailers that include an absentee ballot application. The thing is, his application lacks something PA Dept. of State absentee ballots require:* a PA driver’s license number or the last four digits of voter’s Social Security number. The blog claims his opponent Sharon Brown uses the state version. NPP has the latest Vulakovich mailers (which went out to Republican voters).
*Correction: the new requirements kick in for the general election; the forms used by Vulakovich are legal and will be accepted, several Republicans tell PoliticsPA.
HD-104: Dem candidate Chris Dietz has called on his opponent Rep. Susan Helm (R-Dauphin) to delay implementation of Voter ID. Dietz said he worries that 6 percent – or 2,300 voters – could lose their right to vote under the law supported by Helm.
HD-131: Dem candidate Kevin Deely opened his campaign HQ in Allentown PA. There will be a formal kick-off event for the general election in his new office on Thursday, August 2nd, starting at 6:30pm. Deely is running against Rep. Justin Simmons (R-Lehigh).
