Rail travel will be free in certain parts of Spain from Sep. 1 to Dec. 31, 2022, announced the government.
The promotion applies to multi-trip ticket journeys on Cercanías, which are the short-distance trains, and medium-distance routes.
The new initiative is designed to help Spaniards who have to travel every day across the country amid the rising in fuel prices, but tourists can also take advantage of this offer when visiting Spain.
Tourists should be aware that the deal is not valid for a single or round-trip ticket. For the Cercanías, Rodalies, and Media Distancia services, visitors must choose a monthly or multi-trip ticket on the Renfe website.
Single, round-trip, and AVE trains are not included.
Regional connections connecting Spain’s provinces or autonomous communities are covered by Media Distancia services.
These might be routes linking Cantabria, Valencia, or Andalusia with cities like Madrid.
The Avant, Regional, Regional Exprés, Media Distancia, and Intercity trains are all medium-distance services.
For further details and to purchase tickets, tourists can go to the renfe.com website.
Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s president, acknowledges the current situation: “I’d like the people of Spain to know that I’m fully aware of the daily difficulties that most people have.
“I know salaries cover less and less and that it’s difficult to get to the end of the month.”
This action follows the 30 percent discount on all public transportation, including buses, trams, and metros.
Popular train routes in Spain include:
- Alicante – Madrid
- Barcelona – Girona
- Barcelona – Tarragona
- Granada – Córdoba – Sevilla
- Granada – Málaga
- Madrid – Córdoba
- Madrid – Segovia
- Madrid – Toledo
- Ourense – Santiago – A Coruña
- Salamanca – Madrid
- Sevilla – Cádiz
