If you are planning your 2024 Lake District staycation then read on, as we offer some ideas and inspiration that will help you plan your holiday.
Getting here and getting about
Cumbria is easy to reach by train with services connecting most of the large cities to the area. Within the Lake District you will find big stations at Oxenholme (South Lakes), Carlisle (North Lakes) and there are also a number of smaller stations dotted around the region. It is also very easy to get here by car. Junction 36 of the M6 will connect you to Central Lakes, junction 40 the west coast and Eden Valley and junction 42 Carlisle and Hadrian’s Wall.
If you really want to explore the Lake District, then there are plenty of frequent buses and this will certainly allow you to enjoy the scenery and avoid the need to find a parking space. However, if you don’t want to be tied to a timetable you may find visiting by car to be the easiest option as it will give you more freedom.

The great outdoors
When you visit the Lake District, you should plan to spend some of your time exploring the incredible scenery that the area has to offer. The weather can be rather changeable so don’t forget to pack a good outdoor coat and sturdy boots, and plan your walk carefully.
There are some incredible walks that will afford you some fantastic views over the lakes and fells. Whether you are an experienced walker who loves a long walk with plenty of challenges or a “fair weather” walker who prefers something a little gentler, there is a walk for everyone in the lake district. If walking isn’t for you then there are plenty of cycle paths to be explored and a good selection of places where you can hire a bike as well.
Depending on the weather when you visit you may even want to think about enjoying a watersports, or two.
Art and Culture
The Lake District is an area with an incredibly rich cultural and artistic heritage. It has been home to and an inspiration for artists, writers and poets for centuries. The legacy of these individuals is a huge draw to the area with popular tourist attractions including Dove Cottage, where the poet William Wordsworth lived. There is also Hilltop; the home of the iconic children’s writer Beatrix Potter, and of course the Ruskin Museum in Coniston.
There are plenty of museums in the area – a great option in the event of inclement weather – with the Pencil museum in Keswick and the Lakeland Motor Museum in Backbarrow certain to be a popular choice with younger visitors.
There are several small theatres dotted around the Lake District, too. The Lake Theatre in Kendal and The Old Laundry Theatre in Bowness-on-Windermere are great places for entertainment and there are some fantastic independent cinemas as well offering plenty of evening entertainment options.
Food and Drink
Another thing that draws people to the Lake District is its reputation as something of a foodie destination – there are a staggering 13 Michelin stars dotted around the area. With everything from quaint cafes to cosy country pubs, gourmet restaurants to bistros there are plenty of places to discover on your staycation. Local specialities and fresh local produce are at the heart of many of the dishes you will find here.
