Miami International Airport: All You Need to Know (+ Tips)

miami international airport

Today we’re gonna be talking about Miami International Airport. Are you guys ready for an adventure? Let’s begin.

Miami International Airport

Miami International Airport is notorious for quite a few things. First, it’s enormous. Interestingly enough, though, it’s not as big as people think it is. It doesn’t have like 100 different terminals like, for instance, JFK or some other airports. But it is a large airport.

Customs

The other thing that it’s really notorious for is its customs. Yes, customs can be brutal, but I’ll be honest with you, Fort Lauderdale Airport, and you could go and listen to my podcast about it. The organization seems to be getting better in Miami when you enter the country in general. However, don’t get me wrong, the checking in and doing the whole service, going through like the whole bag stuff, and having yourself checked, that can still last quite a long time. But when you enter the country, customs aren’t as bad as they used to be.

Give yourself the time so that you are not feeling rushed. If you have a connecting flight, do at least two to 3 hours because you still have to go through customs, you still have to go through your bags, you still have to go through the whole thing of being checked, the shoes off, the whole Xray thing again. So just make sure that you at least give yourself a two to 3 hours connection flight. I never do anything less than 2 hours anymore because the stress is through the roof. It’s not worth it.

People Speaks Spanish

The third thing that is notorious is that nobody really speaks any English there. That it’s just a given that no matter who you are, regardless of the country you’re coming from, somehow you must know Spanish because Spanish seems to be the main language in this airport. This one I will not miss because to this day it still amazes me that people will first talk to you in Spanish, and maybe we’ll figure out how to speak to you in English. The workers I’m talking about, it’s quite impressive. You literally are entering a little Spanish-Latino area where you have to somehow find an English-speaking person. Although, it’s not that hard to do as well.

Accessibility

The airport, as they say, is large. There are plenty of handicaps, accessibility, options, there are wheelchairs, there are Escalators, there’s all this other stuff. But you do need to give yourself a lot of time to do everything right. The check-ins for airlines can be long, whatever it is. Security could take some time. So I always personally arrive at least 3 hours beforehand.

Airport Lounges

One thing that I did notice is not every terminal has an airport lounge. I’m a big airport lounge person. My family and I always use them, and some of the terminals simply don’t have them. For instance, if you are with Delta or United or Admirals, a lot of times they are really far away, and then you really don’t want to be going through the whole process every time if you are not flying with one of those airlines. So do keep that in mind.

The internet there is excellent. I have to admit the internet throughout Miami Airport is wonderful because a lot of other airports it’s iffy. But I have to say overall it’s really good.

Food Places

There are plenty of food places for you to pick from regardless of the terminal you are going to be going to. So I wouldn’t worry about that. As we all know, prices for food and airports should be illegal, but there’s nothing you can do about it. Just so that you are aware, it’s super expensive. Other than that, it’s a comfortable airport.

Car Rentals

They do have plenty of car rentals that you could go there. It’s very easy to find no matter the terminal you’re in. Also there is a hotel right there in the airport. So if you have a super early flight or for whatever reason, there’s an airport hotel right there. I stayed in it once before, one of my airlines overbooked or the connection, I can’t remember at this point, or the connection was too short and we ended up in the hotel and it was a decent hotel.

How to Get There?

Miami International Airport is quite easy to get to. If you are taking the Tri-rail, it goes directly to it. It’s literally the first stop you could take when you arrive up through Southern Florida past West Palm Beach, or it’s the very last stop depending on where you are coming from. It literally drops you off right at the airport, and you have to go and take this rail that gets you to whichever terminal you are planning on going to.

Other than that, there’s everything you could possibly imagine in Miami International Airport. It is definitely the largest airport in Florida, bigger than Fort Lauderdale.
