Before I take you a photographic journey of what you will experience while visiting this super fun place for all ages, let’s not forget if it wasn’t for Milton S. Hershey, this place wouldn’t even be on the map. Since I’m a bit of a history buff, don’t miss out on the interesting history of the town and how Milton S. Hershey started it all below.

What You’ll See at Hershey’s Chocolate World

There is no entrance fee into Chocolate World. Once inside, you have a choice of several tours. The actual chocolate tour is free. I know you’re thinking, if it’s free, it’s not that great. Quite frankly, I am in shock, this tour is free.  It was one of the best tours we have had during our entire five-day stay in Pennsylvania. Honestly, if they charged $15 per person, I would have thought it was a steal.

Side note: When you first get online you think it’s a huge wait, but it moves really quickly!

Let’s take a quick ride on the hershey world tour (some of the things you’ll see on this tour):

You start in the moving train

And enter the farm area – the Creamery – greeted by the friendly cows. My four-year-old loved the cows.

Fun Facts about the Hershey chocolate world tours

  • In 1978 Hershey’s Chocolate World was built as a replacement of the Hershey chocolate plant tour.

  • In 1979, a mosaic from the original Hershey Creamery was moved to Chocolate World until 1999, when the retail area named Everything Hershey’s was opened.

  • The first renovation took place in 1978 to add a series of nostalgic shops to the building.

  • On June 1, 1986, the visitor’s center welcomed its 20 millionth visitor.

  • Today, there are still portions of the ride that have changed very little from the 1978 updated version

Paid Attractions to do at Hershey Chocolate World

There are some fun paid tours you can choose to do, but there are two that are the most popular ones and for good reason.

1. 4D Movie Experience – if you don’t know what 4D is, basically it’s a 3D movie with all your senses included. The theater has scents, water, air, movement built into and they are set off to go along with the movie adventure. Kids go nuts over it, and I’ll confess, so do the adults. It’s such a fun show!

2. Create Your Own Chocolate Bar – This is where you create your own chocolate bar, but in the typical factory Hershey Style.

This is all really serious. You have to be fully dressed up like the workers of the factory – hygienic. Even teddy bears need to be wrapped up in case they can shed into the chocolate process.

We truly had a fun time with this. However, my four-year-old got bored and restless really fast. There is a long line to get in, usually a good thirty-minute wait. Since the actual bar is being made in front of you, it takes time, so it’s not instant or hands-on.

Personally, I think this is better for kids six and older, they can grasp the concept a bit more. Or come when there is absolutely no lines when it’s the slow season.

  • It is now one of the largest chocolate companies in the world.

Who is Milton S. Hershey

  • Milton S. Hershey was born on September 13, 1857 in Pennsylvania in farmland owned by their grandparents.

  • Hershey in 1876 attempted to start his own candy business in Philadelphia. Despite six years of hard work, it failed.

  • Sold off in 1877, the family homestead was eventually bought back by Milton Hershey twenty years later.

  • So he moved to Denver and found work with a confectioner who taught him how to make caramels using fresh milk.

  • He then started up a second candy business in New York City. It also failed.

  • In 1886, he returned to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was 28 years old and penniless. Once again he tried making a go of the caramel business. This time, it worked.

  • Soon his Lancaster Caramel Company was shipping all over the U.S. and Europe, employing 1,400 people and turning him into one of the area’s leading citizens.

  • It was at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago that Hershey first became fascinated with the art of chocolate making.

  • While there, he purchased some German machinery, had it shipped to Lancaster and began producing chocolate coatings for his caramels.

  • But aware of the growing demand for chocolate itself, he soon started the Hershey Chocolate Company.

  • He worked to perfect a viable recipe for making milk chocolate. Finally, through trial and error, he hit upon the right formula of milk, sugar and cocoa.

  • In fact, the first recorded sale of HERSHEY’S chocolate was on April 17, 1895.

  • On a trip to Jamestown, NY, he met an attractive, 26-year-old woman with a sparkling personality. Her name was Catherine Sweeney. The couple was married in New York City on May 25, 1898.

  • Hershey decided to sell his caramel company (for $1 million, an enormous sum in 1900!) and devote his attention to making chocolate.

  • As early as 1909, Hershey and his wife, Catherine, established the Hershey Industrial School, a school for orphan boys. Today named the Milton Hershey School. It is located on the farmland where he was born.

  • In 1915, Kitty died.

  • With the death of Milton Hershey in 1945, the company, town and institutions that bear his name were well positioned to continue and grow.
