Hawaii Governor encourages travelers to visit Maui and its unaffected parts again

While Hawai’i works towards recuperating from the destructive and fatal wildfires that swept through western Maui, government officials are advising travel to the unaffected islands and areas of Maui.

Travelers are still welcome to visit Hawaii’s neighboring islands, according to Governor Josh Green and the state’s tourism board, which held a press conference this week.

“Like we saw in the pandemic, decisions we made can affect everyone across the islands. So what we’re saying now is travel should not be to West Maui. But the other parts of Maui are safe,” Green told reporters.

Green said it is safe to travel the rest of the state, and the Hawaii Tourism Authority recommended travelers follow the governor’s instructions as well.

The Maui Tourism Authority encouraged tourists to visit Kahului, Wailuku, Kīhei, Wailea, Mākena, Pāʻia, Hāna but cautioned against visiting Lhain “as the search and recovery efforts continue”.

The Maui Strong website, established by the State of Hawaii, provides the latest news and information for those affected by the fires. For the latest information on traveling through Hawaii, tourists can check with their airline and keep an eye on the official government websites.

After the devastating destruction caused by the wildfires, there was a strong social media campaign by celebrities and organizations urging people not to travel to Maui. Visitors are welcome in some areas of Maui and the other islands, according to recently amended state guidelines.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority, stated in a report titled “Benefits of Hawaii’s Tourism Economy,” that more than 10 million tourists traveled to Hawaii in 2019, spending $17.75 billion. The state received nearly $2 billion in state tax revenue as a result.

Why should you travel to Maui despite the wildfires?
