Funky Fish Ocean Camp is a Must Do with Kids in Fort Lauderdale

One thing I found out about Fort Lauderdale, aside the fact that it is a huge beach town, is that most of the hotels don’t really offer any full-on kids activities. Like our hotel – The Hilton Fort Lauderdale Resort. Even though the city is flooded with resorts of all shapes and sizes, I was amazed how little they have for kids to do either in a supervised setting (not babysitting services) or with parents. We are not huge sun-worshippers or lounge-around beach people, so I’m always on the look out for fun activities. That’s when I found the Funky Fish Ocean Camp and am now fully hooked!

Funky Fish Ocean Camp

The Funky Fish Ocean Camp is one of the most creative ideas I have ever seen for kids. It was founded by Sarah-Jayne, apparently, over twenty years ago. So it has a great reputation.

Quick note: I visit South Florida yearly and have some friends in the area, so when I told them I will be visiting they all screamed that all their kids have done this camp over and over again. Very good sign!

Here is why Funky Fish Camp is a must for your kids to try out:

  • The camp is for kids between 5 and 12 years old
  • They have a full day of activities planned all based around beach fun and water sports

  • They have 2-3 counsellors helping out with the kids
  • You can do one day, or a week, or a month
  • The camp starts at 10 and ends at 3 – just enough time for the kids to fully enjoy themselves, make new friends, but miss their parents
  • Lunch is included
  • Even though the camp has several locations all through out Fort Lauderdale (and just opening on in the Bahamas) the main office and camp is usually at Bahia Mar Resort.

  • They get to learn new activities – for my son it was skim boarding
  • You get a souvenir – a tie-dying shirt my son made there (and uses all the time now)

My Son’s Take On It

I’ll cut to the chase, when we picked him up at the end of the day, all he kept asking me was when can he come back again. Needless to say, he absolutely loved it.

So next year we will not only be returning, but I’m bringing my little guy as well.

And even if we don’t end up staying in Fort Lauderdale, we will be doing the drive from West Palm Beach – where my parents live.
