Budget-friendly Vacations: 6 Best Destinations

Budget-friendly Vacations: 6 Best Destinations

Don’t think you can’t go on vacation just because you’re on a budget! Although some destinations can be expensive, there are plenty of other places around the world that can be experienced on the cheap.

Here are six great vacation destinations that are worth checking out, even if you don’t have a lot of money to spend.

London, England

Brimming with history and beautiful gardens to boot, London, England is a great place to visit if you’re on a budget. Nannybag recommends strolling the streets of Belgravia, Mayfair, or Marylebone and taking in the architecture.

Immaculately maintained parks, like Regent’s Park, Victoria Park, and Hampstead Heath are free, as are many of the museums like:

  • Natural History Museum
  • British Museum
  • Science Museum
  • Wallace Collection
  • National Gallery

If you’re looking for something to eat, get outside the city center. Not only will you find cheaper options, but you’re also more likely to run into the locals and experience more authentic British cuisine.

Washington, D.C., USA

It’s true that Washington, D.C. houses some pricey hotels, but no other US city compares when it comes to free things to do.

There are many Smithsonian museums to explore that house everything from Abraham Lincoln’s hat to the Hope Diamond, and you can see it all for free.

Other national landmarks are free too. Wander the National Mall or explore the Library of Congress with its shelves that contain more books than any other library in the world. You can even tour the US Capitol Building and the White House, all without spending a dime.

San Miguel de Allende, México

Mexico is a favorite destination for those on a budget. Known for its lovely beaches and all-inclusive resorts, many travelers can be seen on the coast.

But what if you want a slightly more authentic Mexican experience? Head inland and visit San Miguel de Allende.

Although it is a short drive from the nearest airports, you can arrange a shuttle service to take you there relatively cheaply. Simply wander the cobblestone streets and gaze at the amazing views that can be seen down each boulevard.

Make sure you duck into the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel, wander through El Jardin, and stop by the Exim Galeria as you come across them on your adventure through the city.

As an expat-friendly city, they are also friendly to travelers. Not to mention, it’s also one of the safest cities in the country.

San José, Costa Rica

As Costa Rica’s capital city, you can bet that there’s a lot to do, and much of it is free!

As is the case with most budget-friendly cities, you’ll find plenty of museums you can visit, but San José has more to offer.

You have to wander through the Central Market. Not only are the sights and sounds unforgettable, but you can try unique fruits and vegetables that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

For just a few bucks you can check out the Spirogyra Butterfly Garden or the Simon Bolivar Zoo. You can’t miss taking a relatively affordable coffee tour if you love having a cuppa in the morning.

Phuket, Thailand

Thailand is known for being inexpensive. Even its premium experiences are affordable for western travelers. When a luxurious hotel and spa services cost less than $100, you can travel like you have more money than you actually do.

If you’re wondering where to start, give Phuket a try. It’s the largest island covered in palm-fringed beaches. You can also experience the Old Town if you’re looking for local culture and the cheapest lodging options.

Las Vegas, USA

Thanks to its over-the-top reputation, it may surprise you that Las Vegas has made the list of budget-friendly destinations. The truth is, a trip to Las Vegas can be as expensive as you make it, but it can be as inexpensive as you make it too.

There are many ways to save on a trip to Las Vegas. Can’t dish out hundreds for world-class entertainment? Look for discounts or venture off the strip. There are plenty of up-and-coming shows with cheaper tickets.

There’s even plenty to do for free—or almost free. Simply walk down the strip and take it all in, or visit:

  • The Pinball Hall of Fame
  • Red Rocks Canyon Recreational Area
  • Seven Magic Mountains
  • The Fountains at the Bellagio
  • The Flamingo Wildlife Habitat

Don’t think that just because you don’t have a lot of money you’re stuck at home. There are many cities all over the world that are perfect for travelers on a budget!
