In what many consider an upset, Allegheny County project manager Erin McClelland toppled state Rep. Ryan Bizzarro in the Democratic contest for its State Treasurer nomination.
McClellan, who was outspent by a wide margin in the race, garnered 54 percent of the vote to outdistance Bizzarro, who had not been challenged in a primary for his Erie House seat in 12 years.
She campaigned on expanding information in database of state contracts, providing a recommended vendor list, and not investing in foreign holdings.
”We have an electorate that is very, very fatigued on being motivated by rage,” McClelland told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “They’re looking for all their elected officials to just do their jobs.
“This is a really important statement from the voters about the voice of women,” she said. “We talk about how we want their votes, but it’s really important to have their voice.”
McClelland will face incumbent Republican Stacy Garrity, who ran unopposed in the primary, in the general election.
“The voters have rejected Erin McClelland three times already,” she said in a statement. “She is a perennial candidate in search of a spot on the public payroll. Her proposals, such as one for a state-run bank, are weird at best. Erin’s biggest political asset was that she was running against Ryan Bizzarro. Now, her biggest political liability is that she’s running against an incumbent with a proven record of accomplishment.”
Bizzarro said, “While the results were not what I expected or hoped for, I respect the voters’ choice. My commitment to the Commonwealth and its people remains undiminished, and I look forward to continuing my work on behalf of all Pennsylvanians in the House of Representatives.”
The Pennsylvania Office of the State Treasurer serves as the custodian of more than $150 billion in Commonwealth funds, and is responsible for the receipt and deposit of state monies, investment management and oversight of all withdrawals and deposits from state agencies.
