The attorney general of the District of Columbia is suing the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers and 31 members of the far-right groups for participating in the mob that breached the Capitol on Jan. 6.
It's the first government-backed legal action against the groups whose members allegedly stormed the Capitol. Members of Congress and the Capitol Police have already filed similar suits in their personal capacities.
The D.C. suit alleges a conspiracy among the groups to attack the Capitol, causing severe harm to the District of Columbia, including damage to buildings and trauma to Metropolitan Police officers. The Anti-Defamation League, the States United Democracy Center and two prominent law firms — Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP and Dechert LLP — are helping as pro bono legal counsel in the case.
The civil charges levied against the extremist groups and the collection of their members include: conspiracy to interfere with civil rights, conspiracy to commit assault, conspiracy to commit battery and conspiracy to committee intentional infliction of emotional distress. The city will seek financial damages and other forms of relief, citing the "unprecedented resources" the government was forced to deploy to protect the Capitol.
