A nationwide recall is targeting people who use injectable wellness supplements, products many consumers assume carry little risk because they are marketed for everyday health boosts rather than treating illness. Centric said an ingredient used in the injectables had elevated levels of endotoxins, also known as lipopolysaccharides. These are toxins produced by pathogenic bacteria that can trigger severe inflammatory reactions in the body. The company reported receiving nine cases describing symptoms including fever, chills, chest pain, nausea or vomiting, headache, and malaise.
These products came from a compounding pharmacy, a type of facility that prepares customized medications for patients whose needs are not met by mass-produced drugs. Because compounded products are often distributed through specialty channels, some patients may not realize their supply is affected and could still have doses sitting at home.
