AdaptHealth, LLC has disclosed that a cyberattack compromised personal information belonging to more than 4.1 million individuals, according to a report from Security Magazine.
The healthcare-related organization confirmed that certain personal data was accessed during the incident, though it stated that financial details—including credit and debit card numbers, bank account information, and Social Security numbers—were not affected. AdaptHealth has not disclosed the exact nature of the compromised data beyond confirming that some personal information was exposed.
In response to the breach, cybersecurity experts are urging affected individuals to remain vigilant. Paul Bischoff, a Consumer Privacy Advocate at Comparitech, emphasized the importance of monitoring for signs of fraudulent activity following the exposure of personal data.
"Patients should keep a close eye on their medical bills for signs of fraud, and immediately report anything suspicious," Bischoff said. He also warned that individuals impacted by the breach could become targets of phishing schemes, in which scammers pose as healthcare providers, insurers, or related businesses to extract further sensitive information. Bischoff cautioned that such phishing attempts could be crafted using details obtained from the breach, making them more convincing and harder to detect.
"Be on the lookout for targeted phishing messages," he continued, advising people to avoid clicking on links or opening attachments in unsolicited communications, as these are common tactics used by cybercriminals to deploy malware or steal additional data.
Bischoff also pointed to a broader trend affecting the healthcare sector, noting that ransomware attacks against healthcare providers rose by 30 percent between July and August of 2026, based on findings from Comparitech's latest research. The uptick underscores the growing risks facing organizations that handle sensitive medical and personal data, as cybercriminals increasingly target the healthcare industry due to the value and sensitivity of the information it holds.
The AdaptHealth breach adds to a growing list of cybersecurity incidents impacting the healthcare sector, where attackers continue to exploit vulnerabilities to access patient records and other confidential information. While AdaptHealth has not detailed the specific measures it is implementing following the attack, experts recommend that affected individuals take proactive steps, such as reviewing account statements, setting up fraud alerts, and remaining cautious of unsolicited communications referencing their healthcare or personal information.
